Protocols and Restrictions
Warumungu people use a range of protocols to ensure that cultural materials and cultural knowledge are reproduced, distributed, and maintained in appropriate ways. In this archive all content is tagged with information about the associated families, countries, gender, and sacred status. These parameters are determined by Warumungu community members.
Whenever a piece of content is uploaded into the archive the appropriate community members decide on a set of restrictions for the content. These restrictions reflect the cultural protocols surrounding the image, video or audio being archived. For example, if someone in a photo is deceased the photo will be tagged with a deceased restriction. When the image is retrieved by the database a warning page will let viewers know the names of the people in the photo who have passed away. Family members may not want to view the image for sometime. But at a later date they will be able to click through the warning to see the photo.
Like Warumungu culture, these protocols are part of a dynamic system. The archive is meant to reflect this cultural system by allowing the community members to make decisions about the protocols.
